Mamen Calatrava Moreno

Computer science meets consulting

María del Carmen Calatrava Moreno, known as Mamen, brings an academic background in computer science to the field of research policy evaluation, breaking new ground for many. As a Principal Consultant, she leads the Technopolis Group’s cross-national data team and brings to her work as an evaluator aspects that cannot be answered by conventional methods.

For example, Mamen recently demonstrated the high relevance of data competence coupled with sector competence in the evaluation of the COMET programme: the evaluation is based on a set of low-structured data and at the end offers a dashboard for interactive presentation of the evaluations.

Since my first encounter with her in the summer of 2015, I have been convinced that she can make an invaluable contribution to the advancement of our field. This has been confirmed since then.“, says Katharina Warta, Managing Director of Technopolis Austria, who nominated Mamen.

Mamen would like to use the prize money for her further development in the field of artificial intelligence in evaluation or in the field of personal soft skills. Although computer science is needed in many industries, Mamen has chosen a career in evaluation.

In this kind of work, I thought the contribution would be greater – to society, but also to myself. Even greater than if I had stayed in academia.
